The Test
On the day of your test you will normally have your driving licence checked by your instructor. Both the plastic card and the green paper document form the complete licence unless you have one of the old green provisional licences which will then also require a current British passport. Normally you will then have a one hour lesson to run over some or all of your manoeuvres, drive on the dual carriageway and in town in order to make you more comfortable and confident.
You will proceed to the test centre and usually bay park in one of the DSA bays. You will then go into the test centre, put your licence down on one of the tables inside (upstairs) and sit with your instructor and wait for your examiner to come out of the offices and call your name. You should lead him to your licence which he will thoroughly check and he will ask you to lead him to your car.
Remember it is your car and you should treat it as such. If you want the heating on – put it on. If you want the lights or wipers on – put them on. Don’t wait for the examiner to tell you to put them on as he wants to see that you are capable of taking responsibility in your car. All these things you should be familiar with prior to taking your test during your lessons.
Before reaching the car the examiner will check your eyesight by asking you to read a number plate of a car in the car park. Be sure your eyes have been checked and you are wearing spectacles or contact lenses if you need them as failure to read the number plate will cause the test to be cancelled immediately. Your instructor should have checked your eyesight at some stage in your lessons probably prior to your first lesson. If you use spectacles to read a number plate you must wear them for the duration of the test.
